If designers choose a paint color for a house, they are not only in front of a wall of chips in the hardware store and select the first HUE first. They are much more methodological than that. Take the Sibella Court, which decided to reach your retreat into the soothing green Australian bushland around your house. Or Annie-Laurie Grabiel and Arthur Furman, the couple behind the Side Angle Side, based in Austin, who landed on Sherwin-Williams Peppercorn for their bungalow because of its perfect mix of black and gray. And if you are a design -loving celebrity like Diane Keaton, there is of course no other way than black and white.

In advance we asked 13 interior designers to share the best paint color that they have ever used for the exterior of a house.

I think a successful outer color is one that is supplemented by its window cladding, gutters, fascia, doors, roof and landscape design. My favorite color, which I personally used on an outer one [pictured above]Black tie from Dunn-Edwards. I chose one of the richest, truly black colors that I could find. I think a dark gray just doesn't have the same effect. I know that it can be a polarizing color, but we get compliments from strangers weekly. –Amber Sokolowski, founder of Soski design

    gray -brown color

When we recently used this in a renovation, we tried to avoid something too hard or Jet Black. This shade has brown under tones that rather mitigate the edge. It fit well with a warmer stucco color and a nickel window frame. – –Abbie Naber, owner and main designer of A.

The best outdoor color I have ever worked is Benjamin Moores Hale Navy. Its rich, elegant depth immediately increases the attractiveness of the curb and effortlessly complements natural stone, wooden accents or light white equipment. –Lauren learner, CEO and director of With lolo life

    White color

The versatility of White Dove makes it perfectly a roof color, regardless of whether you have dark shingles or a light, weathered style. The soft warmth in this white also fits wonderfully with every closure color and offers endless design options. –Kerith Flynn, director and founder of Margali & Flynn Designs

    gray color color

Despite its name, it is not really gray, but a perfectly balanced neutral with exactly the right depth. –Theresa Butler, director and founder of Theresa Butler Interiors

This is a fresh, warm white that looks great in a modern or traditional home. It never reads yellow or blue. It is not so strong that it will burn your retina. And looks good with practically other trim or accent colors that you combine with it. –Tara Lenney, founder of Tara Lenney Design

My soft white is Sherwin-Williams' Alabaster, which gives the facade of a house, paired with shutters in natural choice, a warm taupe with delicate brown under tones. –Regan Billingsley, founder of Regan Billingsley Interiors

We love Tricorn Black by Sherwin Williams for the outside of a house. It is modern, but not too heavy. Some black colors on the outside look like a tar, but it has a little more warmth. –Shauna Jones, founder of Shauna Glenn Design
