Esfahak's registration document unveiled as an Un Best Tourism Village

Tehran – Esfahak's registration document as the best tourism village of UN tourism was officially presented in the Pavilion of South Khorasan during the 18th exhibition Tehran International Tourism and Related Industries. Senior provincial officers signed the certificate.

The historic village in the Iranian province of South Khorasan was won in 2020 by the German Institute for Tourism and Development.

Hadi Shahverdi, General Director for Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Crafts by South Khorasan, emphasized the distinctive historical architecture of the village with traditional houses from mud fire, the tourists captivate. He emphasized that this authentic and preserved architectural style played a crucial role in securing the global recognition of Esfahak.

Esfahak suffered complete destruction in Tabas in 1978 and forced its inhabitants to leave the village. However, the villagers successfully revived and restore their homeland through collective efforts. This remarkable revival of the community attracted the attention of UN tourism, which recognized the commitment of the village for the preservation of its inheritance and at the same time promoted sustainable tourism.

Shahverdi worked on the most important criteria that contributed to the recognition of Esfahak, including the unique natural attractions, the value chain of tourism, governance priorities, the security infrastructure and the small population (under 15,000). The village also has traditional agricultural and forest activities, an unmistakable lifestyle and common cultural values. These aspects, combined with its historical material and architecture, established Esfahak as an exemplary model of the development of sustainable tourism.

The village has a number of natural and cultural attractions, including wide desert landscapes, sand dunes, palm groves and Qanats (old underground water channels). These elements contribute to Esfahak as a prominent travel destination.

Shahverdi also pointed out that Esfahak's rich cultural heritage, customs and traditions played an important role in his global recognition. He expressed himself optimistic that the inclusion of the village in the prestigious list of UN tourism would drive sustainable development, attract tourists and promote investments in the tourism infrastructure. This in turn would improve economic growth and improve the living conditions of the residents.

The international recognition of Esfahak underlines its high historical, architectural, cultural and natural value as well as the commitment of his community. The officials hope that this performance will further increase the global profile of Esfahak and as a goal for travelers who are looking for authentic and sustainable tourism experiences as if it has to be set.

Since 2021, the best initiative for tourism villages is intended to promote sustainable tourism in rural areas and to focus on the preservation of natural landscapes, cultural heritage and indigenous lifestyles, including gastronomy and local values. The inclusion of Esfahak in this global list is proof of the commitment of its villagers to enliven their legacy and to transform it into a sustainable tourism center who honors its past and at the same time accepts a successful future.
