Bjarke Ingels Group to design the nature -oriented Sankt Lukas Hospice in Denmark - PA

The new Hospiz from SKT Lukas and Lukashuset are designed as a village surrounded by nature, which is rooted in the history of the Sankt Lukas Foundation, which goes back to the 1930s. The new 8,500 m2 palliative care center will be an Outreach Hospice team, the hospice to Denmark, and the units for children, adolescents and adults.

The two new construction structures will more than triple and promote the current capacity and an environment that of three core principles – security and a feeling of home, loneliness and togetherness, arrival and farewell promotes an environment that looks after around 2,100 patients annually.

Surrounded by green

All patient rooms have direct access to a private terrace and a look over the surrounding green garden. The rooms on the ground floor have access to an inner courtyard from the corridors

Heart

The centrally placed cardiac space extends into an inner courtyard. The circulation paths are laid out as interconnected loops around the courtyards in order to avoid dead ends and convey a feeling of security and clear finding.

Sensory gardens

The buildings are surrounded by sensory gardens that are developed with recognizable natural landscapes and planted with local species.

The center is defined by simplicity and scale and will fit harmoniously with the surrounding historical structures that are equipped from the original buildings on site. The buildings are surrounded by calm gardens and sensory rooms and expand the interiors outdoors in order to establish a healing connection to nature.
