Tiny But Mighty: Small projects that enrich the home experience

Tiny But Mighty: Small projects that enrich the home experience

The Houses Awards has presented an all new category for 2025: the category of small project.

This new category recognizes the innovation and the influence of small residential buildings such as Granny apartments, studios, workshops, pergolas and pool houses. In order to qualify, projects have to refer to a larger primary apartment, but should be able to stand as an independent project in the evaluation of the jury.

The new category recognizes the changing possibilities of how Australians live, and consequently the variety of residential areas, to which architects and designers react. The Houses Awards continue to attract entries that show inventive solutions for contemporary residential design, and the addition of the new category reacts to a growing number of projects that deal briefs for small projects that enrich the way their residents live. Here we round together some house prices from the past few years to celebrate the potential of this new category.

This outdoor space plays in the subtropical cross station of Brisban's new farm and is an ornamental frame from block work and leaves that contributes to an increased, extrovert house life. The increased pavilion partially borders on a freshwater magical basin, which offers a viewpoint with a view of the Brisbane CBD. The structure supports various functions with a Sundeck roof that is ideal for the fist or entertainment and an inner room or “dandruff” discreetly located in order to store itself or to arouse moments of the procurement. The hard masonry composition and the gray color scheme of the pavilion were selected to emphasize the soft tropical leaves in contrast. James Garden Pavilion was honored in the Garden or Landscape category in the 2023 houses.

This small addition to a generous suburban block in Perth does not prescribe activities or home -made patterns, but creates a versatile, attractive space for escape from the primary apartment. This garden room is an additional room for an existing cottage and can be used for entertainment, relaxation, hobbies or work. In the opponent of the room there is a closed toilet and an open shower with open air, both of which contribute to the practicality of the room in order to spend longer periods. A chain grid structure extends from a backyard basketball court to the pavilion and enables climbing the pavilion roof to climb. The commercial road was praised in the garden or landscape category in the House Awards 2020.

A detached addition to a wooden house in Kerra, Brisbane, has a robust skin made of concrete and galvanized steel. The encore was developed with the customer's frequent work -related travel methods, whereby it was flexible, safe and easy to wait. Therefore, the self -contained unit can be completed like a bunker if it is not used. It can also be completely converted into a light, airy pavilion when large sliding doors are removed. A number of rooms – including a kitchen, a bathroom and a bedroom – enables several functions to fulfill several functions such as an office or accommodation for family and friends. Keperra House won the new house under 200 m2 Category in the 2013 houses.

Writing scales by Matt Gibson Architecture and Design with Ben Scott Garden Design

Writer's Shed is camouflaged in Ivy and embedded in the background of a house in Melbournes east and is an intimate retreat like a cabin in the forest. The project – the architecture and landscape – was designed by Matt Gibson Architecture and Design in collaboration with Ben Scott Garden Design. Instead of creating an impression on the site, the designers camouflage the shed between the garden and border fences, so that it becomes a living part of the landscape of the site. On ten square meters, the lined interior with square geometries plays to arouse spatial interest and at the same time benefit from a green view through a singular picture window. The scrap dandruff was drawn into a closer election in the garden or landscape category in the Houses Awards 2018.
