The aim of the new reading room of the Christian Science of the Mother Church is to appeal to the broadest possible range of guests
With its vibrant, modern street presence and inviting interiors, the Mother Church Christian Science Reading Room in Boston's Back Bay leverages the latest innovative and sustainable retail design trends.
Designed by Dyer Brown, the 3,250-square-foot expanded reading room is suitable for both individuals and families, combining quiet spaces for study and reflection with diverse opportunities for historical and retail viewing.
The updated look underscores the institution's tradition of giving each reading room (there is one on every church campus worldwide) a design concept that is unique to that community's character and culture, rather than a prescribed, brand-based aesthetic.
In this interior, the warm colors combined with decorative trim and moldings create a sense of home, while arched shapes pay homage to the Mother Church.
The aim of the refresh was to appeal to as broad a spectrum of potential guests as possible. The venue also includes a break room, copy room and other back-of-house support spaces.
The first impression counts
The refreshed façade includes an entryway decorated with bladed signs, illuminated signs and natural wood. Underfoot, the word “Welcome” can be read in mosaic tiles on the floor, and several large-format glass panes offer passers-by a view of the performances inside.
Read and relax
Inside, ring-shaped pendant lights hanging above tables combine with natural daylight to illuminate the spacious interior. Carpeted lounge areas invite you to relax and read.
Bring the kids
There are various indoor areas, including an area where children can read and interact with a playful variety of furniture, including cubby-style seating integrated into the millwork.
Calming colors
The color palette of warm blue and green accents evokes an “oasis” theme. A green functional area indicates a retail area where you can make purchases and request assistance. The new reading room is designed to host events and has a high-acoustic glass partition that allows it to be used for meetings and family visits at the same time.
