The ultra-sustainable Melbourne oasis of an architect is for sale

Felicity and Marc Bernstein lasted more than three years for the co -founders of Melbourne Design Studios to “shape” a free triangle in this impressive sustainable house in Coburg.

The project, known as Hütt 01 Passive House, began not only as a prototype for the couple's carbon zero design offer, but also as a family home.

“We not only wanted to create the most inspiring luxurious house inside Melbourne, but we also wanted to build a house with a zero-carbon footprint that is always warm and comfortable that additional heating in Melbournes Cold Winter is required,” says Felicity.

This means that everything was carefully taken into account from the start.

Felicity and Marc were characterized by their knowledge of European design innovations and passive house and decided for us prefabricated panels from CLT (cross-laminated wood) to ensure a drawing-free structure, while wood fiber insulation and triple windows from Austria have contributed to eliminating the need for artificial heating.

To supply the house with electricity, they installed a 10.6 -kW -solar array and a 6 -kW battery, which also serves as a charger for your electric vehicle -which is another reason for the enviable low energy bills of the household.

It was a challenge to say the border to life and take the builders only 10 days to build the 150-part puzzle of panels.

But as soon as the property was completed with five bedrooms in 2021, it quickly became one of the most famous sustainable houses in Australia: 10 architectural and sustainable awards and the highest form of passive house certification.

“We are more than pleased that our home has actually received the best reviews on the scale of the international energy design initiative Initiative, which means that it is even better than carbon zero – and our world a little better than before,” says Felicity.

The funny, family -friendly floor plan shows a “perfect mix” of private and municipal rooms, in which the couple has liked to raise their three children in recent years.

Below there is a sunken lounge that is prepared for film evenings at home because the entertaining areas and the calming kitchen overlook the amazing gardens with a natural pool designed by the renowned Eckersley Garden Architecture company.

“The garden becomes more lavish when the trees grow up every year,” adds Felicity. “There is something new to experience every season.”

On the upper floor is the light-flooded bedroom, including one that currently serves a study with playful mezzanine networks, into which the children often (literally!) Hang up and relax. And in the attic there is an additional living area that serves as a great guest room for visitors or a main suite.

It is a real urban oasis that is only a short walk from Coburg's local square and is within reach with playgrounds, shops, farmers and bike paths.

But when Melbourne Design Studios expanded to Brisbane, Felicity and Marc made the hard call to list the house for sale and leave their passion project open so that a new family is entering into what they proudly call “the best house of all time”!

The Coburg house is listed for a private sale with Whitefox Real Estate. Interest expression closure Tuesday, June 3 at 5 p.m.
