The thing with good design is that it tends to start with someone who sees something in a completely new and different way. This is exactly what happened as an expert Diy-Er and Content Creator Dalia Emad Aly Ikeas Askholmen Flower Box.
Now we are not a stranger of an Ikea hack here LivingetcBut to be honest, most viral furniture nowadays feel more than renovation than according to total transformations. But not this. For this year, I did not have to turn a planting vessels into a design-old novel with a hidden memory on my bingo card.
And it turns out that it is not that difficult either. In order to discover the advantages and disadvantages of this clever flips, I spoke to Dalia and she shared everything you need to know below.

How to do it DIY
“The inspiration came from seeing the flower box online and immediately noticing the outfing edges,” says Dalia. “I always look through the lens of the design element, which I can adapt to the current interior design trends, and in this case the scallops only asked for it.”
From there it is a bit grinding, stains and selection of a new fabric with which it is padded, but all in all it is a simple weekend on the weekend.
Below you will find Dalias Step-by-step instructions to reproduce this clever coffee table for yourself.
- Sand grind the flower box: While painting wooden furniture is possible without grinding, it is not the best practice, especially when working with wood stain. “I started grinding all sides of the box to prepare myself for the spot,” says Dalia. You can use a mechanical grinder, but sandpaper works just as well and do not forget something like water as a treatment before coloring.
- Dye the wood: In order to reproduce the rich, warm wooden finish in Dalias DIY, she recommends using a dark shadow of wooden stain with polycrynic cover lacquer (like this Minwax -Finish from Amazon). If you want to do a little more statement, you can also consider painting the flower box.
- Install backpanels: Since the sides of the flower box are made of smooth wood, after coloring “I painted a wooden plate and cut it to the size to add it inwards so that I hide the memory area and make the exterior look like a seamless, firm piece,” says Dalia.
- Cut the pillows and upholstery in the fabric: Finally, it is time to make the pillow up. It may seem intimidating, but Dalia says that everything she did was to cut a pillow to the size, wrap it into fabric and capture it with a furniture booklet (like this from Amazon).
To be honest, the most difficult part of this project is to choose the fabric to ensure it, as this has the greatest influence on the style of the finished piece.
“The color and the fabric was completely based on intuition,” says Dalia. “I wanted a deep, rich wood tone that felt high-end, and I wanted a fabric that fit this energy, a little velvety and luxurious, but was still contrasting.”
As soon as you have selected, it is also important that you take your time when you shake the padding upholstery. “It is what makes it all or breaks,” says Dalia. “An order of cleaning crawls immediately makes a piece of high-end.”
As soon as you are finished, you recommend using high -quality fabric protection such as Scotchgards Fabric Water Shield (available from Amazon) so that it looks fresh.
What you need
Askholmen flower box in dark brown
This IKEA flower box is made of solid acacia wood and in an acrylic stain (which is why the grinding step is decisive to re-dye the piece in a color of your selection).
Backboard panel, 2.5 mm
It is important to note that you can color MDF from wood, but absorb the stain differently than real wood, which leads to a slightly different texture or color. However, since this part of the DIY only acts as a back board (this is not hard to see), it should not affect the end result.
Wooden clinic wooden stain (dark oak)
This wooden stain is quickly drying, highly concentrated and easy to apply. You can use this both inside and outdoors, but it is based on water-based and non-toxic, so you can feel safe to integrate this into your interior.
Camelot stripes in the juniper
Lotus Sky Tana Lawn ™ cotton
Boho Velvets fabric from Sanderson
When it comes to style your new coffee table, as with any other, it is important to create contrast. Of course, depending on the fabric color and wooden stain, you can create contrast in the piece yourself, but it is more important to think about how it will sit in the room.
Depending on the fabric you have chosen and the color you can combine it with different color combinations and wooden tones so that it can make pop. This flower box-Ottoman storage can act as an accent piece in a minimalist living room or simply as a clever, forward-looking, hidden storage idea.
And the true genius is that “it is super versatile – it could work as a coffee table, a side table or even as a statement piece in a corner,” says Dalia. “To be honest, the possibilities are endless.”
