The Canary Yellow Café, the gift shop and the soon to soon open a large opening in May and offers a new turn for coffee in Wilmington's cargo district.
The owners, Jordan Giovannucci and Christopher Russell, described that the opening of the café in 16th N. Eightth Street opened as a dream and passion. Before this company, Giovannucci and Russell worked both for years in the hospitality industry via Airbnb.
“We wanted to do something more,” said Russell. “We were looking for a room in the city that could be able to fit what we wanted to do.”
The original concept for Canary Yellow was an inn for guests, but it was finally in the current coffee and gift shops.
“We wanted it to have all the things we want when we went to a place,” said Giovannucci. “A place where you can shop to get things for the beach, jewelry or a small gift, or something you may need if you lived with us. We wanted to shape it together.”
Giovannucci and Russell boomed the business in the coffee shop below and have opened the opening of the upper floor for guest in their rooms with color motifs.
“There are three rooms above,” said Giovannucci. “We wanted it to be a little deep box so that we can be extra and exaggerated to the people who stay with us.”
Giovannucci said that every room in the inn would be coordinated with a range of colors that she selected for the room. Giovannucci has a background and a passion for design that can be seen throughout the location.
“It felt like the designer as if the room wanted to be pink,” said Giovannucci and explained the concept of the Canaryian yellow, which was pink. “I found a few things that I really enjoyed, and I wanted to include it in the room, such as the vintage cakes and arches.”
Giovannucci said she and Russell painted her hand inside and outside the house. Russell said that the café had done more work due to sanitary and electrical aspects. The two currently work in the rooms that are available to guests.
Giovannucci said she wanted to keep the color concept with her coffee drinks. “I wanted to do something else because I felt that other coffee shops only stay in basic things,” said Giovannucci. “I wanted to challenge myself. I found syrup and tried them and found colors that agreed.”
The drinks in Canary Yellow are based on Pantone colors that correlate with their flavors and topics of the drinks. “I had a color and had to take it over. I felt life a crazy scientist with espresso,” said Giovannucci.
The shop sells products from various artists. Giovannucci said some of the cards she created, but come from other local artists. The work of art that is shown throughout the inn also comes by artist Giovannucci.
Canary Yellow is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
