Man shot by the police during the siege in Daisy Hill, Victoria

A man died after being shot in the central gold fields during a change of shooting in the tiny Victorian city of Daisy Hill.

The police said they received a number of calls for shots that were fired in the Menzies Drive on Thursday afternoon.

The ABC spoke to a woman who said the man shot her husband and just missed him before the shooter hid in her dandruff.

She said the man lived near her house.

The deputy commissioner Mick Grainger said when the officials arrived, the man threatened them and he had a knife and explosive.

“We do not believe that the people who belonged to the shed had a commitment,” said the deputy commissioner Grainger.

The deputy commissioner said that attempts to negotiate with the man had failed for several hours.

Specialist units, including the critical reaction team, the Special Operations Group and the dog caders, were called.

“Unfortunately, a confrontation occurred shortly before 10 p.m., where the man left the shed, produced a firearm and was shot on the police,” said the deputy commissioner Grainger.

He said the officers were forced to attribute and kill the 39-year-old.

This is something in which no police officer certainly wants to be involved. It is incredibly sad for everyone involved.

Nobody else was physically injured during the incident.

The deputy commissioner Grainger said that information about the fatal confrontation and the man involved were limited at this stage, but there was no persistent threat to the community.

He said it was assumed that the man's firearm was homemade.

“Certainly the members of the public were incredibly concerned about the behavior that occurred at this address, which caused us to be there.”

Detective for murder cadres are now being examined together with the command of the professional standard according to the standard procedure for a fatal police shootout.

The neighbors didn't know that people had gun

Susan Maguire and Gary Gault live next to the property where the shootout took place.

They said they knew the man involved, but did not find out that he had been shot until this morning when they heard the news on the ABC.

“We didn't even know that he had a gun,” said Gault.

The couple said the little Daisy Hill community was knitted closely and looked at each other.

“If something like this happens, it is quite scary,” said Mr. Gault.

“We have no crime or anything here.”

Ms. Maguire said she heard screams yesterday afternoon and then received a text from a neighbor who said it was a police in front of her house.

Mr. Gault said he was glad that the police asked her to evacuate in the evening.

“The back of the house is our living room and that is right next to the shed where everything started,” he said.
