SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – A Greene County judge is giving the owner of a now-closed roofing business another chance to present his case.
Meanwhile, customers wait years for refunds.
On Your Side's Ashley Reynolds first told you the story that led to Missouri's attorney general taking action.
We're talking about LoveOurRoof. A multi-state roofing company with a location in Springfield that suddenly closed in 2021, leaving hundreds of customers in limbo. A year later, the Missouri attorney general filed a lawsuit.
However, it took years to serve the two out-of-state owners. One paid and was recently dismissed from the case. The other repeatedly failed to show up.
Jim Harding is one of the owners of the now-closed LoveOurRoof. Missouri's attorney general is demanding he pay. Court documents show the AG is demanding he pay $44,011.38 in restitution to “defrauded consumers.”
This involves a motion for sanctions and a default judgment. Harding failed to show up several times. Twice failure to appear for statements. And he wasn't in a Greene County courtroom Thursday morning.
The judge has now ordered him to appear in person to testify later this month. Or he could face contempt, judgment and “any appropriate compensation necessary.”
“Hopefully he'll come to the realization that this isn't an issue that can't be ignored,” Chase Mills said.
Mills is among dozens of Springfield customers who didn't get what they paid for. In 2021, he paid a $9,000 down payment on a new roof. Recently he got some money back because the other LoveOurRoof owner paid.
“35 percent is better than zero percent. Definitely grateful for the AG's office for giving us something back. Do I want the full 100%? Of course anyone would, but you have to be grateful for what you get. Regardless of whether you get money, it was about awareness. We thank you and your team for that too,” Mills said.
The other owner paid a total of $20,000.
Harding did not have an attorney listed in the case.
