The power of a rug is undeniable. Given their ability to transform a room in an instant, it's understandable that they've long been relied on to pull a design together.
Although rug trends change every year, many vintage styles have long been valued for their character and charm. From the world-famous Persian carpet to the classic Berber style from Morocco – these long-established patterns have stood the test of time for a reason.
Whether you're looking to refresh your living room rug ideas with color and pattern or add timeless charm by decorating in vintage style, designers agree – these four vintage rug patterns are their all-time favorites.
1. Persian

Persian rugs are often at the forefront of rug trends. Despite being one of the longest established carpet styles, it continues to enjoy popularity among interior designers around the world.
Evelina Juzėnaitė, senior interior designer at Planner 5D, explains: “Currently, Persian style is the most popular style. It is symmetrical, with repeating motifs. It is popular for its historical depth (it has been around for centuries), its visual balance (interesting symmetrical patterns), its adaptability (patterns and colors can be chosen to suit different interior styles), as well as its Quality and durability (it is handmade, leak-proof and wear-resistant).”
Many Persian carpet patterns are popular, including Tabriz, known for its intricate patterns, Kashan, famous for its unique floral medallions, and the ever-popular Heriz for its geometric weave.
While some carpet colors will go out of style in 2025, Persian patterns are an easy choice for any interior due to their enduring nature. Evelina advises: “Let the carpet serve as a base (it can be neutral, but also bright like blue, green or red). To make the carpet an eye-catcher, the entire interior should be neutral rather than bright or vice versa. Since the carpet patterns are very active and numerous, I recommend making other surfaces more minimalistic.”
As part of ours Better vintage In the series we explore why vintage Persian rugs always prove to be absolutely timeless.

Derived from the Persian style, the Medallion style is a classic flooring with a historical past. In fact, you often see medallions on living room rug ideas. You can easily recognize them by their distinctive circular pattern in the middle. These carpets are often highly stylized and feature elaborate floral borders.
Jen Baxter, founder of Baxter Hill Interiors, explains: “I love a medallion or repeat floral pattern – it has an enduring quality with a sense of tradition.” There is something timeless and familiar about the rhythm of these delicate, symmetrical flowers. It’s a strong but calm pattern that introduces some movement without overwhelming the space.”
Jen suggests opting for a more minimalist approach when incorporating a medallion rug into your design. “Combine a soft, vintage-style rug with clean architectural lines and natural materials—let a classic pattern ground a modern space, providing balance and calm contrast.” '
