3 insights from the Houzz US Emerging Winter Trends Report

As a new year begins, homeowners are looking for ways to enjoy the winter months and also for smart entertainment solutions, according to the U.S. Houzz Emerging Winter Trends Report. “They also embrace seasonal cheer and experiment with geometric decor and design,” says Marine Sargsyan, staff economist at Houzz.

I recently covered Houzz's 6 bathroom trends you'll want to incorporate and was excited to share the interior design trends for 2025. Below are three key takeaways from the New Winter Trends report, along with photos from Houzz designers and data on how much Houzz searches for specific keywords are up sharply this time compared to last year.

Smart entertainment solutions

  • Kitchen islands with folding leaf: searches increased by 202%
  • Pop-up trundle beds: searches increased 179%
  • Professional organizers: searches increased by 50%
  • Record Storage: Searches Increased 46%

According to Sargsyan, homeowners want to entertain and host and are looking for multifunctional features that can also help them organize. “Houzz searches for 'folding leaf kitchen islands' are up 3.5x compared to the same period last year – and that suggests a preference for flexible, space-saving solutions,” she says, explaining that this type of design appeals to homeowners allows flexibility between preparation and mixing rooms.

Versatile furniture—like pull-out daybeds, which saw a threefold increase in Houzz searches compared to the same period last year—also makes hosting overnight guests more practical.

Vinyl records are becoming increasingly popular, and when entertaining, homeowners are looking for vinyl storage solutions that double as design features. They are also trying to vacate their homes for winter hosting, leading to a surge in searches for professional organizers.

Embrace seasonal cheer

  • Green Throw Pillows: Searches Increased 285%
  • Blue Throw Pillows: Searches Increased 101%
  • Green table lamps: searches increased by 82%
  • Red Carpets: Searches increased by 55%
  • Wool Rugs: Searches increased by 36%

The holidays may be over, but homeowners want to continue creating a welcoming and festive environment during the winter season. “Compared to last year, this time searches for 'green throw pillows' have increased four times and searches for 'blue throw pillows' have increased two times,” says Sargsyan. Searches for “green table lamps” also increased, as did “red carpets” and “wool rugs.” Sargsyan explains that homeowners want festive color palettes and rugs with natural stain-resistant properties.

Geometric decor and design

  • Curved Cabinets: Searches Increased 156%
  • Square coffee tables: searches increased by 47%
  • Checkerboard floors: searches increased by 47%
  • Oval mirrors: searches increased by 41%

“Modern and structured designs, especially geometric shapes, provide balance in the winter season,” says Sargsyan. “Searches for 'arc cabinets' have almost tripled, reflecting a growing interest in organic modern style.” And she says searches for “oval mirrors” are up 41% compared to the same period last year, while searches for “oval bathrooms.” Cosmetic levels have increased fivefold.

Sargsyan explains that the increased interest in “square coffee tables” and “checkerboard floors” reflects a desire to create visual interest and clearer structure in rooms. “They are used to create a bold, graphic statement that complements softer textures and colors,” she concludes.
