Location: Provincetown, Massachusetts
Project size: 7,400 square foot

program: On the ridge of a vegetated dune next to the national coast of Cape Cod, Copperdrifts was initially designed as a summer house for a couple and their adult children. When the pandemic influenced its main district in Park Slope, Brooklyn, the couple decided that they would make this into their main residence as soon as she was finished. They wanted a studio to create a gym, an office, an office for working from the main house and many indoor and outdoor areas that he can entertain.

Design solution: Charles Rose Architects designed a number of three discrete buildings that extend to the east to West, which are connected by outdoor areas. Two large volumes – a bedroom wing in which the main suite over two guests – suites are able, and a living wing with a cave under a great room, a dining area and a kitchen – left and form the residence. A central staircase in the interstitial space between the volumes combines seven different levels of the house.

A short pea stone entrance curves to cover the view of the house from the road to the north. It leads to a series of monolithic granary steps that rise to a terrace with a view of the landscape and a pool in the south. In the east, a staircase rises to the main entrance into the large room. And in the west you can enter the office structure – covered over the garage, fill spacious windows with light and offer a view of the location – or descend to the pool and pool terrace.

At the eastern end of the residence, an activity building shows an artist studio with large doors that open on a deck with fireworks. There is a gym under the studio. Each of the connected outdoor areas are equipped with amenities for entertainment: a wooden fuel fireplace on the pool terrace, an increased, depreciated veranda with a grill and seating area and a large roofing with fireplace, whirlpool and spectacular views in all directions.

Structure and materials: The steel-wood structure is mainly with a flat copper over a rough, concrete base. Copper was selected because of its durability – in view of the hard coastal conditions – and the graceful way, as is aged and marked over time. The building inputs are characterized by an interruption of the total volumes and a change in the material to unfinished, the yellow cedar attached to the ship, which is weathered into a silver gray that complements the patina of the copper and can fall back the house in the area. The outdoor paths, steps and steps are made of salt and Peter granite or unfinished mahogany.
