29 March 2025, United Kingdom: At the 405th meeting of the Cabi Executive Council, progress to cope with the greatest challenges of humanity – including hunger, poverty, gender -specific inequality, climate change and the loss of biological diversity – were reported.
In the meeting it was emphasized how Cabi, with its 48 member countries, worked together into priorities that were agreed as part of the medium-term strategy of the organization 2023-2025. Dr. Daniel Elger, CEO of CABI, found a strong delivery against the effects of the strategy for 2024.
Reduce sustainable loss of yield due to pests and diseases
Dr. Elger found the progress of Cabi's flagship in a new and expanded phase in 2024. This will affect at least 27 countries and is to reach around 75 million people in order to sustainably reduce the loss of yield due to pests and diseases.
An important element in Plantwiseplus is to reduce the risks associated with pesticides, and it was discussed about the meetings of the plans of CABI to continue building work in this area with its member countries.
The meeting also heard of progress in the development of a new initiative in relation to sustainable landscapes and about the growing work of CABI to improve the available evidence for the support of the guidelines by vehicles such as the Juno Evidence Alliance and the global stress on the harvest loss. The progress during 2024 when improving the information and the product range of products available in the CABI Digital Library was also highlighted.
New chairman of the Executive Council elected
The Executive Council chose her excellence Dr. Fatou Bensuda, High Commissioner of Gambia in Great Britain and the Commonwealth and former public prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2012-2021 as the new chairman of the Executive Council.
Dr. Bensouda was the first woman who held her position in the ICC, and previously she held high -ranking legal positions in Gambia, including Attorney General and Minister of Justice. She serves as an ambassador in a number of countries.
The outgoing chairman of the Exzellenzdhanpaul has been thanked for his service for his service in the past two years and congratulated on his recent appointment as finance minister in the new cabinet of Trinidad and Tobago.
The member countries also chose Mr. Dmitry Robertson, consultant (political and economic matters), Jamaican High Commission, and Dr. Sadik Kassim, Deputy General Director, General Director of Agricultural Technology, National Agricultural Research Organization (Naro), Uganda and alternative liaison officer for Uganda, to serve as an observer of the CABI board for next year for next year.
The Executive Council approved the budget of CABI for 2025 and its financial plan for 2026-2027.
