Bangladeshisch architect and The educator Marina Tabassum and her company Marina Tabassum Architects were unveiled as designers of the 2025 serpentine pavilion.
The Pavilion 2025 entitled A Capsule in Time will be unveiled on June 6, 2025 in the South Gallery in London. Faithfully according to his name, the shape of the pavilion of a capsule resembles four portions with its mass, which each accept a tunnel or a half -body shape. A wooden facade and a translucent material offers a dynamic experience for visitors and enables the shadow play of both outdoor and inner angles. An open courtyard is located in the center of these four elements and offers a recovery of Shelter.
An outstanding aspect of the design is a kinetic feature: one of the portions can slide to connect and separate a connection and effectively transform the pavilion into a new room. This dynamic feature and the fabric facade are both inspired by the architectural language of Shamiyana tents and margins, which are usually seen in South Asia, which are similarly kinetic in the function and have an external fabric supported by bamboo rods. These traditional South Asian buildings are typically built for gatherings and outdoor celebrations.
Tabassum reflects the design of the pavilion: “The archaic volume of half a capsule, which generates through geometry and wrapped into light semi -transparent material, is a Bengal wedding. The serpentine pavilion offers a unique platform under the summer sun to unite as people who are rich in diversity. The stage is set, the seats are placed. We imagine various events and encounters that take place in this diverse space that combines people through conversations and connections. ”
This year's pavilion was selected by a jury that was the CEO of serpentine, Bettina Korek, artist director Hans Ulrich Obrist, director of construction and special projects Julie Burnell, exhibition curator Chris Bayley, curator for large architecture and local projects, Natalia Grabowska and deputy exhibitions . Curator Alexa Chow together with consultants Sou Fujimoto and David Glover.
Tabassum is a celebrated architect and educator who has received numerous international recognition in the field of architecture. Her practice Marina Tabassum Architects (MTA) was founded in Bangladesh in 2005. The studio prioritizes the integration of research and education by carrying out extensive studies on the effects of climate change in Bangladesh – in close cooperation with geographers, landscape architects, planners and other related specialists.
The pavilion is accessible to the public from June 6, 2025 to October 26, 2025.
