It's not always easy to find a Black-owned hotel or resort when traveling, even when exploring countries where the population predominantly identifies as Black or of African descent.
In the United States, for example, less than 2% of hotels are Black-owned, representing a small but growing sector of the hospitality industry. While global numbers remain unknown, some studies show that there is a perception that Black people do not frequent luxury hotels and resorts (as evidenced by the lack of representation in mainstream media and marketing), let alone own these spaces.
That's why we've created a list of Black-owned luxury accommodations in unexpected places.
African bush camps – Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe
Founded in 2006 by Zimbabwean guide Beks Ndlovu, African Bush Camps is one of the few black-led luxury safaris in the world. ABC believes in creating immersive and personalized itineraries without losing sight of its commitment to community and conservation.
Guests have the incredible opportunity to book a luxury tent between three countries: Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. What sets your experience apart from booking with other safari companies is Ndlovu's commitment to engaging local guides from the community, creating an authentic experience that connects you with the region's culture and nature.
Casa Noir Cartagena – Colombia
When Harlem native Shawn Roseburg developed the concept of Casa Noir, he was simply inspired by a desire to highlight Black culture and heritage in a city where nearly 50% of people are of African descent. Even in a city known for celebrating its black culture, there aren't many places like Casa Noir.
Located in Getsemani, Casa Noir is the first black-owned hotel in Cartagena. This city tour takes you to the center of several major attractions such as the Museo del Oro Zenu, Marina Park, Plaza de San Diego, Clock Tower Monument, Rafael Nunez Museum and the Walls of Cartagena. Key guest amenities include room service, a rooftop bar, spa and wellness services, a rooftop hot tub and airport shuttle.
Crescent Solar Eclipse – Montego Bay, Jamaica
Luxury has never felt better than a stay at Half Moon in Montego Bay, Jamaica. There's a reason it's one of Jamaica's most desirable resorts. Guests describe it as a biophilic sanctuary that offers both luxury and healing that nature brings right to your doorstep.
Wake up every day to the waves and sparkle of the Caribbean Sea to the north and lush hills to the south. There are nearly 60 luxurious and spacious accommodations, creating an intimate space. There are also two restaurants, three bars, a Salamander Spa, a spacious infinity pool and a private beach with a natural bay on site.
The Two Bedroom Ocean Suite is one of the most incredible experiences here at Eclipse at Half Moon. Guests seeking more indoor-outdoor living will enjoy this airy suite overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Each bedroom has a private terrace, large ensuite bathroom and private outdoor showers.
Hotel Sages – Bali, Indonesia
As soon as you enter Hotel Sages, you will quickly learn why it is the villa resort of choice for frequent travelers in Bali. It is a magical stay and guests will undoubtedly sense the owner's intent to create a relaxing oasis in one of the world's most breathtaking and transformative destinations.
The Hotel Sages emerged from the pandemic. The owner's original plan for the space was to create an artistic retreat where people could come together, create and socialize. It has evolved into something much more. With the stunning soaring arches, open courtyards and tranquil outdoor areas, it's clear that the artistic touches are still there. This resort in Bali's Canggu community is a tranquil luxury that invites relaxation, intention and mindfulness. The art is to create peace and luxury.
The Michelle House – Barbados
La Maison Michelle has been uniquely designed to combine elegance and sophistication with privacy and warmth. The resort offers everything the Caribbean lifestyle has to offer: a mix of relaxed outdoor living, warm weather, warm people and an environment that promotes well-being. This resort is perfect for travelers who want to enjoy the luxury that only the Caribbean can offer.
The resort is located on a hill and offers panoramic views of Barbados' Platinum Coast. It is a boutique resort with just seven villas covering a generous 13,000 square meters of living space. The villa's modern interior design stands out from the lush tropical gardens and beach surroundings. Waterfalls cascade in the courtyard, creating a rainforest effect full of greenery.
The great thing about a small boutique option is that the experience can be customized for each guest. For example, meals are prepared by a private chef to suit your tastes, ensuring a unique and authentic Caribbean dining experience.
Narragansett House – Martha's Vineyard
One of the dreamiest and airiest places to stay on Martha's Vineyard is the Narragansett House. This whimsical gingerbread house was built in 1870. The 150-year-old Victorian home gives Oak Bluffs an exciting yet charming character.
The rooms of this island paradise vary in size. There are options for solo travelers, couples and families. Some rooms have sloping rooflines and hidden balconies, but all feature modern furnishings, art, and vintage decor that celebrate the chic vibe of a vineyard house.
Spice Island Beach Resort All Inclusive – Grenada
The hardest part about experiencing resorts like Spice Island Beach Resort in Grenada is the depressing thought of leaving. This elegant resort is located on the stunning Grand Anse Beach in Grenada. It is a AAA 5 Diamond rated resort that spans 1,600 feet of powder white sand.
Spice Island Beach Resort is a premier resort. The property delights guests with its 17 luxurious pool suites, breathtaking sunset views and private rock gardens. Of particular note is the way the staff makes each guest feel like Spice Island is their home away from home. They are treated with the utmost care.
