As Airdrie residents, the local RCMP ask them to think beyond flowers and fences -and say that small design optimizations can deter thieves.
The department promotes a strategy that is called crime prevention by environmental design or Cpted and focuses on lighting, visual lines and access control to reduce the opportunities for crime.
“By making intelligent, inexpensive changes to your property, you can reduce the possibilities for crime and improve your general security,” said Airdrie RCMP in a media publication on June 6th.
Mounties suggest to enter their property and search for simple upgrades, starting with visibility. This includes the trims of overgrown trees and bushes, which hold bushes under the window height and the maintenance of clear vision lines on doors and entry points.
They also recommend locking up tools, ladders and lawn equipment, fences or natural barriers such as thorny plants to define borders, and avoiding large data protection fences or solid walls that block visibility.
Lighting plays a key role. RCMP suggests installing LED or motion sensor lights to install doors, entrances and dark corners of the property. Solar -powered options can help to illuminate areas without wiring, and the devices should be placed high enough to prevent manipulation.
Homeowners are also encouraged to keep expensive items out of the road, use high -quality pads and sack screws for external structures and to ensure that their house number is clearly visible to rescue workers.
The residents are further encouraged to join or start a community Watch group in order to keep the neighbors up to date and committed.
At the beginning of this month, the RCMP of Alberta spent a provincial memory of court theft and break-and-in, which found that in June 367 in June 367 in the RCMP jurisdiction in the RCMP reference stand were reported.
Like her Airdrie colleagues, Alberta RCMP ask the residents to take simple steps to secure their real estate and to reduce the opportunities for crime. Other tips include the locking of back atmosphere, the cover and securing of windows, if they are not at home, and the installation of security systems – especially on seasonal real estate or for those who often travel.
Cpted is an internationally recognized model to prevent crime based on the use of physical design to discourage criminal activities and promote security, said the RCMP of Alberta.
The group also recalled the residents of reporting suspicious activities. “Reports tell us where to see who we should patrol in the future,” said Alberta RCMP in her release.
