French Heritage brand LaliqueRené Lalique was founded in 1888 and continues to keep a robust presence throughout France and worldwide and catch the hearts of new fans and lifelong collectors who continue to search year after year.
Just this year, Lalique opened his New York flagship store in the historic Chopard villa on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The flagship called “Maison D'Cists” acts as an urgent experience in the brand and emphasizes its commitment to six key product categories, including decorative objects, interior design, perfumes, jewelry, works of art and hospitality.
It cannot be denied that the parts for which Lalique is known is beautiful, but what explains the status of the permanent symbol? We spoke to three remarkable experts – all enthusiastic Lalique collectors – to share the special components of their own Lalique collections and why they believe that the brand has retained such a permanent prestige around the world for centuries.
Tailor -made architectural accents
The interior design Timothy Corrigan, which is based in Paris and Los Angeles, discovered the Lalique brand for the first time in the 1980s. “One day I walked a street and there was the most incredible building with these sculptured glass doors,” he reflects. Corrigan decided to explore the inside of the building just to find out that it was actually René Lalique's former apartment. “It was incredible and it was the first time that I could really experience the power of Lalique from an architectural point of view,” he said. “I think that was really when I fell in love with her as a brand.”
Corrigan now regularly integrates Lalique offers both into his own home and into his customer projects. The first Lalique piece that he ever bought for personal use was a solid black vase with a deer design, better known as the Biches vase. “It's so chic and I still use it today,” says the designer. Corrigan is still attracted to the brand's architectural offers and found that when designing a bar by the sea in La Jolla, California, he has brought room to life a few eight feet high crystal panels, one of which has a mermaid motif.
Lalique is a 20th century brand that has developed over time, “really a feeling of timeless luxury,” says Corrigan. “It wants high-end customers to really really want,” he reflects. “You can only know that it will continue to be chic.”
Timeless and historical family
The New York interior designer Sasha Bikoff is also attracted to the Lalique brand for her timelessness. “It is part of the design story that is the highlight of elegance, class and style,” she says. As someone who is constantly looking for inspiration in the outside world, Bikoff also appreciates how Lalique's offers often represent natural elements. “My inspiration number one in life is nature,” she says. Her favorite pieces in her personal collection include a Dragonfly brooch that embodies the bizarre quality that she admires on the brand. “Lalique took these mystical stories and these ideas and he made them something unique,” reflects Bikoff.
In addition to purchasing current offers, Bikoff also likes to describe vintage -slalique creations at auction, collects perfume bottles, tablots and much more. “You use these pieces in your house and you automatically become an outstanding piece in the room,” she says. Bikoff is currently most pleased to further explore Laliques Light selection –The Aurora wall lightsNamed after the Roman goddess, sits in the top of her wish list. “I think lighting is the jewelry of the house,” she says, noting that she appreciates it, as René Lalique was able to translate his background as a jeweler into the creation of lights.
“The craftsmanship that goes in, the weight of these pieces; they are handmade, with the best materials,” says Bikoff. “If you have a unique product that has a nice story behind it that is made in a highly possible way, this is the recipe for an eternal brand.”
Permanent quality and bizarre attraction
The celebrated rapper Curtis Jackson, better known as 50 cents, discovered the Lalique brand many years ago. He recently was more interested in interior after he has designed all of his own houses in the past three years. In all its properties, he has a total of more than 20 Lalique pieces.
Jackson bought his first Lalique piece, a chandelier over 15 years ago. “I have always loved collecting the finer things in life, and this chandelier began my collection that I added every year,” he says.
Jackson is not only appreciated by the brand's lighting, but also a fan of Laliques many animal sculptures. “You have this crazy level of detail – the shape, the expression, the craftsmanship -, everything is there,” he thinks. “Lalique is defined by quality,” he adds. “These are legacy pieces that are to be passed on by one generation to the next.”
