What a modest one -story house seems to be End of a forested driveway nearby Lake O'Dowd. But the look can be deceptive – and surprising. Many thanks to an ingenious design by architect Mike Gray And Greg vose from ArchitectureThis “modest” residence is actually a palastic 6,866 square meter residence that melts into the landscape.
At first glance, it was love for Paul and AJ when they saw the empty property in 2021 for the first time. At that time the couple lived in Linden Hills With their three small children and as much as they liked the neighborhood, they wanted to be closer to nature so that the children could explore the forest. A cabin was not a good option because the few careers are busy and sometimes works on weekends. So they started looking for Lake real estate near the subway, and found this via two acre properties The peninsula on Lake O'Dowd In Shakopee – a Sustainable 9 Design + Build Community.

AJ remembers her first visit. “We went through the property on a snow -covered day, and it was so peaceful and pretty under the trees. We looked at each other and said:” It will. “” You lead it like a friendly family business, “says AJ.
The couple estimates the architecture from the middle of the century, in particular the emphasis on natural materials, the interior and location connection and the location-integrated design, in which the shape and size of the house reflect the contours of the existing landscape. This meant working with the class, a gentle slope to the lake that suggested a strike. With regard to the grade, the reason is why the front of the house has a bridge from the entrance to the front entrance and a floating veranda (actually built on concrete pillars). Both seem to float over the slope, explains the architect Mike Gray. “The house is designed in such a way that it should sit lightly in the country. Simple gestures such as crossing the bridge or flowing light and air under the screen veranda underline this deliberate connection to the location.”

At the same time, the couple needed space for his family of five – an open kitchen/meal and a living room for daily efficiency, five bedrooms and bathrooms and easy access to nature so that the children could train, explore and run all year round. This was the impulse behind her application for a large veranda and an indoor sports area – places of the whole family to get fresh air and move independently of the weather.
Sustainability was also before the spirit. “We were both influenced by a book that a friend called to us Build a sustainable home By Melissa Rappaport Schifman“, Says Paul. The couple was in good hands with sustainable design + build, whose main focus has designed and built up and built energy -efficient and healthy houses in the past 20 years. Hanson, partner at Sustainable 9.
This house fulfills the highest standards of the green building without affecting an ounce of style, comfort or performance. The triple window windows are enormous and beautiful, the geothermal heating and cooling system holds the house perfectly warm or cool with a fraction of the costs, and the sunroof is ready for panels, so that the house becomes a desired network away from the grille. But it doesn't stop here. The air inside is also healthier, since the colors, fabrics and other materials in this house do not contain any volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can release harmful chemicals. The devices and mechanical systems are all-electrical, and the devices with a low river save water without feeling bathers withdrawn. Green Building has traveled a long way, says Hanson. “Homeowners no longer have to compromise. These systems are, which is usually included in a“ code ”with lower energy bills, comfortable interior temperatures and clean air. We expect many of these systems, surfaces and techniques to be code in five to 10 years. “
All of these green characteristics are more than seen, as they should be, as they should be, the beautiful red oak, the view of the lake and the forests and the splashes of the mid -century style (Terrazzo Bloors, a brick fireplace, a mono staircase). Sustainable 9 senior interior design Elizabeth Welsh worked with Paul and AJ to get local materials Living 44 modern design showroom is in St. Louis Park So that the house can be made comfortable and unique for your taste with pops of the color atomic era everywhere.
A surprise on the ground floor is a wooden cavity with wool carpet, a window seat and soundproof wall-a place for the couple's record players, the record collection and the books. “Paul and I hang around here after the children are in bed. We listen to music and introduce ourselves to withdraw here when they are teenagers and take over the house!” AJ says with a laugh. It is a secret room that is hidden in sight. From the living room it looks like an unbroken wall made of red oak paneling, but it disguises a door that turns into the room – a sophisticated and playful note.
Another unexpected room in the house is a huge screen veranda to the side. Rather like a secondary family room with infrared ceiling heating, a wooden fireplace and a table with a ping pong table, it is a way for the family to get to the sun, rain or snow with protection against the elements. “It is the largest screen veranda that we have ever built,” says Hanson. The size reflects the value that the couple is on nature outside of nature. The veranda was one of its top priorities. “If we even take fresh air for 20 minutes, we feel physically and mentally better. Sometimes we don't understand that as an adult,” says Paul.
If the family is not outside, you may find them on the lower sports field (another surprise for visitors because it is not visible from the front of the house) with seasons and hosting Harry Potter Tea parties, shoot or play baskets Pickle ball. “We are amazed at how to develop our vague ideas and the” feeling “that we wanted here and become a reality,” says AJ. “It was great to work with S9 again and to see how they expanded and kept the same feeling of the family. Even the parents of Chad helped. We love that.”
