Drone video shows progress at the stadium

Construction of the roof of Christchurch's new inner city stadium has passed the halfway point.

A new drone video with commentary from BESIX Watpac project manager Adrian Jones provides a detailed look at progress to date on the $683 million One New Zealand Stadium.

“The roof structure is now past the halfway mark,” Jones said.

“The roof structure consists of modular sections, prefabricated on site and installed from the end of Tuam Street towards Hereford Street.

“Every three to four weeks you can see the next roof truss progressing north.”

There are four roof trusses, each consisting of three sections and weighing approximately 160 tons each.

Steel work on the roof will continue over the Christmas holidays. The fourth and final roof truss is expected to be installed in early 2025.

“The final radial trusses will be installed early next year when the roof is extended to the north stand,” Jones said.

He said 90 percent of the radial roof racks have been installed and the final few are expected to be installed early next year.

Jones said work on the final stand – the Northwest Stand – was completed about a month ago.

Now the seats in the 36,000-seat stadium will be available from around April 2025.

The last concrete slabs on which the seats are attached are now installed in the lower seat shell.

Work began on installing the roof cladding over the South Stand, which borders Tuam St, at the end of November.

“The roofing will now be progressed in both directions towards Barbadoes Street and Madras Street over the next six months,” Jones said.

Work began on steel cladding the outside of the stadium last Wednesday. The façade will feature a pattern of 800m of sheet steel, with colors reflecting the Canterbury landscape.

Local visual artist and graphic designer Morgan Darlison (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Porou, Tainui) developed the artwork for the stadium.

The video also shows a bird's eye view of the west stand, where the players' facilities and company boxes are located.

“The last area we will build [in the north stand] is the level four media platform,” Jones said.

The project remains on budget and is on track to open in April 2026.
