Touching landscapes and a work of art that was created for the gala of the Durham Miners' gala are among the work for the auction in the course of this month.

The highlights of the sale in Anderson and Garland in Newcastle are three works by Sheila Fell, which was born in Aspatria, Cumbria, and was discovered and looked after by LS Lowry.

The pieces of a private collection represented an “exciting opportunity for collectors”, said the auctionators.

Also included in the sale on September 24th is an original oil on plywood from Bob and Roberta Smith entitled We are are here!

Fell (1931–1979) was inspired by northern views and created powerful and uncompromising representations of rural and industrial landscapes.

She was discovered early by Lowry, who became her mentor and champion, and was elected to the Royal Academy in 1969 and her work takes place in large public collections, including the act.

Two smaller canvases – arable land near Aspatria and Allonby – have estimates of 10,000 to 15,000 GBP and a larger title Haycart for the evening, 20,000 to 30,000 GBP.
