Borussia Dortmund, a leading football club in the Germany's Bundesliga, will build the world's largest stadium sonnen roof with 11,000 photovoltaic panels and an energy capacity of 4.2 MW.
In a partnership with the Energy Giant RWE and the leading leading PV module manufacturer JE Solar, Borussia Dortmund will install the extensive solar car on the roof of the Signal Iduna Park, its legendary stadium.
“With the modules of JA Solar, which supply the largest photovoltaic system with electricity on every stadium roof, we are taking the course for a more environmentally friendly future,” said Carsten Cramer, Managing Director of Borussia Dortmund.
The club aims to complete the ambitious project by the end of summer 2025, which will be a considerable step towards sustainable sports.
To operate the stadium of the stadium
The system with elegant black modules from yes solar produces over 4 MWh of electricity annually.
“This unique combination brings unprecedented black and yellow energy on the field, on the stands and now on the roof-one new standard for the energy transfer,” said Solar in a press release.
This edition is sufficient to supply the floodlights of the stadium for impressive 1,000 games a year.
The club intends to use all electricity generated on site and significantly reduce its CO2 footprint. The initiative is expected to reduce around 1,800 tons per year per year.
In order to further improve energy efficiency, a 3.4 MWh battery storage system is integrated, which ensures stable and reliable power supply.
Feeding excess energy in the power grid
This project builds on Borussia Dortmund's earlier sustainability efforts, including a smaller 1 -MW PV system, which was installed in 2012.
“The PV system on the roof delivers enough green electricity every year to cover the compensation for the club's electricity consumption during all its house games in the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the Champions League for one year,” explained RWE.
“Excess electricity is sold on behalf of Borussia Dortmund and fed into the power grid.”
The cooperation between RWE and Borussia Dortmund extends beyond the stadium roof.
A recently installed PV system with over 200 modules on the roof of the Borussia Dortmund Fan World next to the stadium already contributes to reduced energy costs.
Inspirational model for other sports organizations
The modules of JA Solar, which are recognized for their aesthetic attraction and efficiency, correspond to strict standards of the supply chain.
The partnership underlines the versatility of these modules for large -scale commercial applications that go beyond their common use in residential areas.
“The Borussia Dortmund project also shows that these modules and others from the extensive portfolio of JA Solar-for commercial roofs are equally suitable,” emphasized the company based in China.
The conversion of the stadium into a Green Energy Hub could serve as an inspiring model for other sports organizations worldwide.
“We believe that Borussia Dortmund and yes solar have many common values, and we are really proud that our modules should be used for this project in this iconic stadium,” Henning Schulze, Vice President, solar.
