Interiors are enlivened by a touch of greenery, offering a sight of refreshing tranquility amidst the dense urban space. The interior becomes a soothing sanctuary through the inclusion of gardens. The interiors are not limited to gardens, but also focus on sustainable decoration that is environmentally conscious and adds organic energy to the space.
In an interview with HT, experts decoded the trend. Neha Garg, founder and principal designer of Studio Jane Designs, explained: “The movement towards sustainable decor and indoor gardens is more than a passing fad; It is a change in lifestyle that corresponds to growing environmental awareness and the desire for well-being. Today, households adopt eco-friendly practices that reduce their impact on the environment while creating a healthier and calmer environment. Houseplants contribute to the aesthetics of the space, while also improving air quality, reducing stress and encouraging a connection to nature within the urban fabric.”
Rahul Mistri, Founder and Head Designer, Open Atelier Mumbai, shared his insights on the trend and explained how this trend blurs the line between indoors and outdoors by introducing freshness, while sustainable decor helps minimize waste and reduce CO2 -Reduce footprint. He described this as going beyond mere aesthetics and fostering a deeper connection to the environment.

Spatial green glow
Each room has its own personality. Decorate it even further by adding a touch of green that feels rejuvenating. Neha Garg of Studio Jane Designs listed the green accents for rooms:
- Living room: Add tall plants like fiddle leaf figs or rubber plants and place them next to the sofa. Alternatively, place hanging planters near sunny windows. The cascading tendrils add vibrancy to the room
- Bedroom: A lavender or jasmine plant next to your bed can improve sleep quality, while miniature succulents make bedside tables look stylish and calm.
- Kitchen: Plant herbs vertically on the walls or let microgreens spotlight the countertop. It is both functional and chic.
- Bathroom: Brighten up the bathroom with pothos or bamboo and let them transform the shower area and exude a spa-like atmosphere. Wall mounted planters can also be added. Even if the bathroom is small, the plants manage to give the room an aesthetic look.
Small space, big green energy
“Who says small apartments can’t be green?” Neha Garg suggested displaying green plants vertically using tiered shelves or wall-mounted planters to save floor space. She also recommended investing in furniture that doubles as a planter, such as coffee tables with hidden green chambers, and combining plants to make a powerful green statement.
Rahul Mistri emphasized the use of vertical gardens such as climbing plants and wall shrubs to incorporate lushness and thoughtful design into compact spaces. He added that bright foliage and flowering varieties can add a natural pop of color. Smart furniture like side tables with built-in planters and creative upcycling ideas like converting old jars into planters help reduce clutter. For a unique cascading effect, he suggested using stair treads to hold tiered planters, creating a dynamic green display.
Niches of nature in the corners and green patches
Niches are unused, enclosed spaces in any room. They have great decor potential and can be used for other purposes and made more environmentally friendly. Rahul Mistri suggested some ideas on how to perfect these corners and make them shine. In addition to redesigning corners in nature, he also recommended incorporating green touch-ups in the rooms.
- Plant boxes with glass coating: Add these spaces, such as a partition between the bedroom and bathroom, to create a natural focal point.
- Small potted plants: Plants at different heights in living rooms or bedrooms, whether on shelves or hangers, add a splash of color while restoring ecological balance.
- Greenery improvement in the living room: Plants on coffee tables and small corners create a natural, organic atmosphere, which in turn evokes a feeling of serenity.
- Photo wallpapers with plants: Combine real plants with painted murals to blur the lines between art and greenery in living rooms or transitional spaces and create a relaxing atmosphere.
Sustainable and environmentally friendly facility
This trend is not only about being eco-friendly but also about making the interiors eco-friendly with sustainable decors
Rahul Mistri recommended sustainable decors that are also stylish:
- Use natural fabrics like recycled wool and silk or natural textures like linen to add a cozy, earthy tone.
- Add Hillux boards. Made from natural waste, they offer durability while reducing environmental impact.
- Include lime plaster. This is sustainable and gives the walls a natural charm.
Neha Garg combined sustainable decor with upcycling. She suggested:
- Give your old furnishings a second life. Recycle old jars or ladders into unique planters or display shelves.
- Add jute or linen pillows for an earthy look.
- VOC-free paints and reclaimed wood surfaces provide the ideal ecological background for your indoor jungle.
Think “within the box”
Decorating isn't just about following the rules. It also has to be experimental. Neha Garg suggested thinking “within the box” and installing mini greenhouses or shadow boxes to showcase plants as living art. These frames can hold succulents, air plants or moss gardens, creating a stunning vertical focal point while saving space.
Neha Garg also reiterated the importance of sustainable decoration. She said: “Sustainable decoration is more than just aesthetics; It's about creating a home that benefits you and the environment. From plants that bring life into every space to eco-friendly materials, 2025 is about living in harmony with nature.”
