If you recently drove over the Hoan bridge, you probably noticed the addition of fences. Security fences were added to the bridge in 2023 by financing the Ministry of Transport by Wisconsin to prevent rubble from falling below.
A very positive, unintentional result of this fences was a decline in the suicide from the Hoan. Before 2023, one or two suicides of the Hoan bridge occurred annually. In fact, there were seven suicides on the Hoan in 2020.
Since the fences were installed, we have seen a strong reduction in suicide on the Hoan. In 2024 there were huge bridge suicides, and so far none until 2025. We have not increased any suicides in other places.
The reduction of access to fatal means such as bridges makes a big difference in suicide prevention. Studies have shown that the installation of bridge barriers is associated with a reduction in suicide in an entire region.
This life -saving directive change required the support of the governor of Wisconsin, the cross -party legislators in the Assembly of Wisconsin and the Senate, and was also supported by many community groups, including the medical college of Wisconsin, in the state budget, which comes into force in accordance.
