The architectural company HWKN, based in New York City, has completed the third tower of the legendary Journal Quadratprojekt in New Jersey and realized a ten-year vision for urban transformation.

This tower, the highlight of a decade of visionary planning, represents the final component of a dynamic transit -oriented community and contributes 598 rental contract recordings and almost 18,000 square foot (1,672 square meters) of equipment rooms for social and active life.

“After a decade, our vision and the knowledge of the effectiveness of our chosen design – one that combines timeless aesthetics with a socially activated basis – is profound,” said Matthias Hollwich, founding manager of HWKN.

“The transformation from a transit hub to a flourishing urban community was what Journal Squared should always achieve,” added Hollwich.

This new 59-story tower complements two existing high-rise buildings, one with 53 floors and the other with 70.

Together they offer a total of 1,840 apartments and 36,000 square meters for retail and the restaurant. In cooperation with Handel Architects, HWKN designed every tower in such a way that it gently connects to the floor, which led to a lively and accessible foundation.

The open lobbies and the retail of the towers, combined with tree-filled squares and open markets, have converted the previous parking spaces and the scout areas into lively green rooms that organize peasant markets, film screenings and community events.

The Journal Squared is located directly above the Hudson of Manhattan and offers residents and the local community a new model of city life, the mixture of architecture, municipal areas and retail in an environment that promotes social interaction.

The panorama sky lounge at the top of the latest tower is the outstanding function of the project, which offers breathtaking views and promotes a sense of community among all residents of Journal Squared.
