Stainless steel silver is known for being durable and environmentally friendly. However, if it is packed in plastic, some of these advantages are clouded.
A Reddit user informed his experience with the purchase of a plastic fork set and triggered an interesting discussion among the commentators about plastic waste.
What happened?
In the R/Anticonsum Community, the original poster uploaded a photo of a cutlery set from Oneida you bought by you. Unfortunately, the parts were wrapped individually in plastic, as they explained in the post office.

The commentators were horrified by the excessive packaging and encouraged people to buy more environmentally friendly companies.
“Please write an assessment with this photo. Like -minded people will stop buying them. It is a real way to take measures against this behavior,” said one person.
“I hadn't even thought about that this may be one thing before I saw that,” said another.
“Nothing angry to see me more than the unnecessary packaging … The solution stares at our face,” added someone else.
Why is plastic waste concerned?
As the UN environmental program explained: “Our planet suffocates plastic.” And this is not an understatement, since 50% of all plastic produced are produced for disposable items that normally end up on landfill or environment. The UNEP reported that the world produces around 440 million tons of plastic every year, but only around 10% are recycled.
When these materials get into oceans and other natural areas, they freely put poisonous chemicals that can damage animals and ecosystems, causing wild animals to suffocate or to be involved in plastic. According to Condor ferries, astonishing 100 million marine animals die of plastic waste every year, with 100,000 those by getting involved.
The plastic also affects humans when the materials in small pieces, which are called microplastics and contaminate the environment and enter into drinking water supply. Numerous health problems were attributed to plastic such as reproduction disorders, cancer and respiratory diseases.

Do companies do something about it?
Onida, now owned by the Lenox Corporation, has not disclosed its sustainability practices, so that his guidelines in relation to plastic are unknown. However, some companies choose to wrap silver goods in plastic individually to protect it during shipping and handling, although the commentators found that they could take more sustainable options such as recyclable paper.
What else do companies do with plastic waste?
Legislators, companies and consumers have all campaigned for containing plastic use and the demand for better practices. For example, Unilever-one of the largest consumer goods companies of the world in a company has been said to be in a company that transforms plastic waste according to the consumer into usable products. This could drive positive changes in the industry and encourage other companies to follow the example.
Legislators in Pakistan, California and Massachusetts have banned disposable plastic bags, and consumers call out large brands such as Clorox and Coca-Cola to deceive the public to use plastic in products.
Individually, we can reduce our plastic use by paying attention to greenwashing and selecting companies that offer sustainable packaging options. Small changes such as switching to a reusable water bottle instead of buying disposable or updating to bar shampoo and conditioner can also have positive environmental impact.
