“Their collaborative approach, bringing together a range of stakeholders including scientific experts, landowners, communities and NGOs, will accelerate the restoration of peatlands across Scotland at scale.”
“During the five-year commitment, we will take a science-based approach. We will build on best practices and share insights across the sector to improve our shared understanding of peatland restoration, while supporting nature restoration, water resilience and climate action.”
Scaling impact through strategic partnerships
The program is managed by Caledonian Climate and delivered in collaboration with scientific experts, landowners, local communities and other stakeholders.
Impacts will be tracked across carbon, water and biodiversity, supported by collaboration with Wetlands International and other conservation groups. All projects will prioritize collaboration and co-financing, combining private investment with public mechanisms such as the Scottish Government's Peatland Action Fund.
The work will also support initiatives co-funded by other distilleries and partners, including work with the RSPB on the Oa Nature Reserve on Islay.
Coenraad Krijger, CEO of Wetlands International, says: “Healthy peatlands are exceptional climate protectors as they not only sequester carbon, which mitigates climate change, but also store water, which helps reduce floods and alleviate droughts.”
