Lake Waccamaw commissioners will consider a text change regulating structures along the waterfront on Tuesday.
A public hearing on the proposed ordinance will be held at 5:00 p.m. in the city commissioners' rooms, 205 Flemington Drive.
The change is reportedly intended, in part, to clarify the need for building permits for projects such as privacy fencing along the waterfront. Samira Davis has been issued a stop-work order for a privacy fence, saying she needs to protect her property near Dale's from trespassers. Davis said shortly after purchasing the property in 2022, she was asked to clear an overgrown area that would provide a view of the lake. She told the media that she then started having problems with people using her property.
Davis said the city's previous building inspector said she didn't need a permit for a privacy fence.
The proposed text amendment will clarify the standards for location, height, material and transparency of all types of structures along the coast.
The draft calls for new rules to “preserve scenic views of the lake and canal for residents and visitors. No structures higher than 4 feet and must be at least 50 percent transparent. Under the new rule, only access paths, steps, decks, handrails and guardrails, bulkheads, fences and walls, and pavilions are permitted.”
City commissioners are expected to vote on the ordinance at Tuesday's regular meeting at 6 p.m. The public can comment on the proposal at the hearing, which begins at 5 p.m
