The Ministry of Industrial Supervision and Inspection (Ayeyawady Region) said efforts are being made to boost sales of traditional Pathein parasols in Myanmar with local demand and penetrate foreign markets.
Pathein parasols used to enjoy strong local demand. Nowadays they are only used as interior decoration accessories in wedding ceremonies and other large events. Therefore, the department is trying to influence the purchasing behavior of locals and promote Pathein parasols as souvenirs.
“Pathein parasols are in high demand during festivals during the peak tourism season. This iconic parasol was previously used by the royal families. We are trying to expand the market through exhibitions and shows. There are 25 types of Pathein parasols, including decorative items, umbrellas designed for both sun and rain, large parasols found on the beach, parasols with charming patterns containing artist's paintings,” said a department official of Industrial Supervision and Inspection (Ayeyawady Region).
Over 5,300 small and medium enterprises in the Ayeyawady region have received temporary SME certification. The department tries to provide SMEs with the necessary technical and financial support. The department tries to build a bridge between SMEs and investors and traders through local and foreign trade fairs. – ASH/KK
