Lucknow: Varanasi zone Additional Director General Piyush Mordia on Thursday issued an advisory on using illegal electric fences in agricultural fields following a spate of deadly incidents in eastern Uttar Pradesh. In recent weeks, farmers in several districts have installed electric fences around their crops to prevent damage from stray livestock. This practice proved to be extremely dangerous and is illegal. On Thursday, three people – two in Azamgarh and one in Mirzapur – died after coming into contact with live wires. Previous incidents were also reported from Sonbhadra, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Mau and Ballia. Police officials said murder charges were filed and arrests made in cases where the fences were found to be illegally electrified. Mordia said unauthorized electrification resulting in the death of human beings or animals is a serious offense under BNS Sections 105, 106 and 110 and is punishable by imprisonment and fines; The crime is not punishable. Mordia said Section 126 of the BNS prohibits unauthorized use of electricity, while Section 135 treats such acts as electricity theft, punishable by up to three years in prison and fines. Police appeal to farmers to use only non-electric fences such as bamboo, barbed wire, wood or nets and to avoid any form of electric fences. Police officers have urged farmers to immediately report illegal fences or unauthorized connections to local police or electricity authorities. tnn
