Portable solar fences that restore peace between humans and elephants

“To improve this fence, we first meet with the community,” explains the fence technician Cooper Zimba. “We clear wooden sticks 10 meters apart, attach the insulators, wire the line and connect them to solar -powered batteries.” The fences are only activated if necessary – usually at night – to reduce the risk and save energy.

So far, 76 kilometers of Poly -Wire -Wire have been secured to roll over the Kasungu -lukusuzi -corridor, including 60 kilometers, which were added by IFAW and 16 kilometers of DNPW. 30 kilometers that cover 450 hectares of arable land in 15 grouped farms were installed. Efforts are made to equip the remaining fences.

But it is the local property that advertises the long -term success of the project. As Charles Siamel, IFAW's field and community coordinator, explains: “It's not just about building up a fence – it's about enhancing communities to protect yourself.”

And it works. “Before that, elephants terrorized us,” says Sarah Moyo in Gola. 'But since this special cable has installed, things have changed. When they first touched it, they ran. They didn't come back. '
