New fences are not the only security measure on campus. SC State will also increase security patrols along campus property, particularly during events.
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State University has announced plans to add additional fencing around campus to reduce pedestrian access to the university.
The announcement comes just two weeks after two shootings over Homecoming weekend.
Students at South Carolina State University say they have noticed a change on campus and among their fellow students.
“I've noticed that some of my people are just very anxious, I would say,” said student Shawnterriah Geddis.
Students believe the new security measures are necessary.
“We definitely need it, after everything that happened at Homecoming and everything that can promote safety, we definitely need it. No more negative press, let's build it, and soon,” said student Dory McCallister.
In a statement to News 19, university leaders said
“I can't say 100% because someone can find a way to make something happen, but I feel like we're going to have some type of security, with security guards and security everywhere,” said student Greg Kenon.
New fences are not the only security measure on campus. SC State will also increase security patrols along campus property, particularly during events. The students say they have already noticed her presence.
“I really appreciate that because it makes us feel safer when we actually see it,” Geddis said.
According to the university, crews are expected to complete construction and repair of damaged fences by mid-November.
News 19 reached out to SLED for an update on the investigation into the shooting. Officials said it remains an active and ongoing investigation.
