Researchers at Tohoku University in Japan have found that solar collectors can deliver up to 85% of the country's electricity requirements on roofs and electric cars.

According to the study, Japanese scientists have confirmed that the massive installation of solar collectors on roofs and electric cars will meet 85% of the country's electricity requirements and reduce emissions2 By 87%. The study emphasizes that the limited amount of land for installing solar collectors in Japan can be compensated for by the roof area of ​​more than 8,000 square kilometers and the rapidly growing market for electric cars.

Combination of PV systems on the roof with an electric car batteries is a practical and inexpensive solution that promotes the transition to renewable energy sources and for self -sufficiency of energy. The researchers carried out a comprehensive feasibility analysis for 1,741 municipalities. They are based on the assumption that at least 70% of the roofs in Japan are equipped with photovoltaic panels with an efficiency of 20%, and electric cars with 40 kWh batteries will work as a home storage facility with about half of the capacity to support the network.

The results showed that Solarphotovoltaic roofs can produce up to 1.17 TW/H per year that exceeds the total amount of the electricity generated in the country in 2022. In addition, the study results show that such a system could reduce electricity costs by 33% by 2030. The study can not only be of interest to Japan, but also for other countries with a limited space for solar collectors.

In rural areas, the study shows that some municipalities could generate more electricity several times than they only need by using panels on the roof.
