Qicang Design creates a teahouse as a tranquil retreat in China

Nestled at the intersection of busy streets in the coastal city of Ningbo, ChinaXinHeYe Tea House by Qicang Design offers a tranquil retreat from urban chaos. Inspired by the rituals of tea and the rhythm of the seasons, the 80 square meter Space embodies the essence of tranquility and brings tradition, innovation and nature into harmony.

Visitors reach the teahouse via a curated path flanked by dome-shaped green spaces. Two plots of land dotted with lush plants lead to the unobtrusive entrance from where you enter Stones are arranged at irregular intervals over a pond. Upon entering, the building reveals itself to be a quiet refuge – black Wood facade that blends into the green surroundings. Inside, the architectural team uses dry landscapes, warm tones and organic materials to create a calming atmosphere. Earth-colored walls are combined with dark wood and stone furniture, while olive and yellow accents unify the color palette. The spatial arrangement is deliberately uncluttered and allows for the creation of light patterns, while sliding and folding doors connect the interior spaces with the outdoor greenery.

Different textures make up the interior of XinHeYe Tea House

The interplay of light and shadow transforms Qicang Design's XinHeYe Teahouse throughout the day, enhancing its tranquil atmosphere. Two stone walls in the lobby give the space a tactile quality. A sculptural niche in the stone provides a communal gathering place with a fire whose flickering warmth evokes a sense of timeless ritual. The centerpiece of the tea house is a bar counter made of black wood and copper-green metal, where tea and pastries are prepared. A five-meter-long speckled mirror visually expands the space and contrasts with the earthy textures of the shelves below.

Furniture and antiques hand-selected by the owner—from black-lacquered fruit plates to European antique chairs—add layers and emphasize the timelessness of the space while maintaining an emphasis on practicality despite their theatrical placement. Seasonal changes are celebrated through floral installations and curated tea rituals, reflecting the passage of time. From spring cherry blossoms to winter snow, the teahouse reflects the natural cycles of life, creating an ever-evolving narrative.
