Recently, the rooms outdoors of Sultan Haitham City were awarded the best landscape architecture design at the Arabian Property Awards. This is not only a recognition of the vision projected into this company, but also in the way in which structures such as buildings and even open spaces reflect national efforts and identity.
Gardens may only be gardens for many – a place where they can enjoy time with families and friends. In fact, we often do not think of the process of conception of spaces outdoors, their meaning and their purpose.
According to researchers of urban spaces, physical and cultural spaces play important role in identification, creation and consolidation by national identities. Examples from Europe are the way gardens are presented as tough versions of the wilderness or as representatives of the community wishes in the 20th century.
Similarly, the landscape design in Oman can be seen in a new, innovative way that reflect the nation's changing perspectives and priorities. Oman has already been recognized for his traditional cultural heritage day, as it reflects in its urban landscape with low risk, and also sees subtle changes in external modeling that take the harmony into account with the community.
A physical structure with mixed use is the need for the hour, since it solves the challenges of lengthy pendulum and access to everyday comfort. This applies in particular in a hot climate like that of Oman, which is about offering easily accessible comfort and luxury.
In many ways, this reflects the direction in the design and landscape in Muscat – and in other cities throughout Oman. The prioritization of stimulus buildings, material and design defines urban spaces as modern, but also culturally confident and proud. This is also the essential message of Oman Vision 2040.
The fact that this is best reflected in the physical structures, but also in the surrounding gardens and parks, shows increasing recognition of the importance of nature for the facilitating of a love of nature and a harmony with nature, which leads to a holistic lifestyle.
Landscape design is an integral way of how modern amenities and historical awareness can be recognized and shared. The presence of traditional shrubs and trees that are native to a place helps with maintenance, but also teaches visitors about local vegetation.
Creating a feeling of continuity with the past, but in the eye of the future by buildings, residents and visitors enable us to take part in a common national vision. It helps to create awareness, proudly give and promote the nation.
When we remember to claim identity through physical spaces, we often think of historical buildings such as forts and castles. It is even more interesting to see how landscaping can lead to similar claims of national consciousness and pride. With other innovative concepts such as the newly built botanical gardens in Muscat, such a green awareness will contribute to a common purpose that is sustainable and respectful.
While there are a number of obvious opportunities to present inheritance and tradition, landscapes give the historical stories another visual element and at the same time improve pride in the nation.
