"Tourism has to benefit everyone": Elena Orland via Spain

For Orland, sustainability is not about efforts to protect the long-term livelihood of tourism.

“Sustainability in tourism means that economic, social and ecological problems should be taken into account in a balanced manner if a decision is made when an activity is planned or carried out or if tourism services are provided,” she said.

Such an approach, she believes, helps to ensure that the goals continue to offer a living and at the same time maintain the landscapes, cultures and communities that define them.

“It is a smart way to ensure that tourism remains a source of income and at the same time protects the environment, the cultural heritage and local communities,” added Orland.
