In New Zealand, fences are so omnipresent that we don't even think about the rules.
Not so in many other places: It is unusual in many American suburbs to have a roadside fence. In urban centers in Europe and the USA, you can see a low fence and a small pocket retail garden (as we call it) in front of a strong stone town house.
People want street front real estate fences for obvious reasons. Privacy, security, pets and children.
In urban areas we have seen a preference for large stone or concrete walls that have a nickname that I cannot say on the radio- they know the variety with fortress gates and intercoms.
What are the rules for fences, especially for fences on the street front? And why do councils are always picky about road front fences?
