LEHI, Utah, December 9, 2025–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Vivint, the leading U.S. security and smart home company, has released its first How We Home Report. The newly conducted study reveals how the home – including what's inside and how its residents interact with it – has evolved over the past five years, creating new needs and preferences among homeowners.

Today, homeowners expect their living spaces to serve a variety of functions beyond rest and relaxation – more than one in four (27%) currently work from home, more than 2 in 5 (41%) also use their home as a gym, and almost half (48%) regularly host friends and social gatherings. To meet their diverse and growing needs, 85% of homeowners now have at least one smart device in their home, with 61% having purchased 1 to 3 smart devices in the last 12 months and more than half (55%) planning to purchase new smart devices in the next 12 months.

“As homeowners become more digital and aware of what’s available on the market, expectations for smart homes are changing as quickly as the technology that powers them,” said Jim Nye, chief product officer at Vivint. “While priorities continue to evolve, our research shows that others remain unchanged: the desire for connected, intuitive and affordable smart solutions that keep homes – and what matters most in them – safe and secure.”

Growing demand for smart home security and barriers to entry
The top 10 most commonly used smart devices include smart TV or streaming hub, smart speakers/voice assistant, smart doorbell, outdoor security camera, smart thermostat, indoor security camera, smart lighting, robot vacuum, smart sockets or outlets, and smart locks/keyless entry.

When asked about the future of smart technology, homeowners say safety and security are most important to them (37%). In fact, one in five have specific intentions to purchase an outdoor security camera (20%) and/or a smart doorbell (19%) in the next 12 months.

However, consumers have also expressed key areas for improvement arising from their diverse needs and increasingly busy daily lives:

  • Comfort: Technology creates the expectation of convenience, and this is only amplified in the smart home space. 22% of current homeowners believe their smart devices could offer even more convenience, customization and personalization, and more than half (54%) say ease of use and ease of installation/setup are top priorities.

  • Integration: The industry offers a wide variety of solutions, but these can feel overwhelming and disjointed experiences are a deal breaker. 41% of homeowners who use smart devices don't really consider their home to be “smart”, 63% prefer integrating all devices into one platform or app, and when asked what might stop them from purchasing, 20% say there are too many different apps or ecosystems, while 18% cite a lack of compatibility with their existing devices.

  • Cost: Costs are the main concern for everyone. It is the most important consideration for more than half (53%) of homeowners, including both smart home device users and non-users.

Energy efficiency as an emerging trend and cost saver
As homeowners become conscious of their finances, energy management is becoming an important factor – not only for the environment, but also as a means of controlling costs. 77% of homeowners are interested in a smart home solution that offers holistic energy management and efficiency, as 59% report their energy bills have increased in the last 12 months. Additionally, 32% say they look for energy efficiency, monitoring or reporting in their smart home solutions, while 40% of non-smart home users say energy efficiency is an important consideration when purchasing a smart home device.

“This study provides a clear direction for smart home providers: Offer devices that integrate and create a level of personalization, convenience and accessibility that truly makes their daily lives much easier – not busier and not more cluttered,” said William Stovall, senior vice president of marketing at Vivint. “More than any other brand on the market, Vivint is uniquely positioned to achieve this. Vivint products are professionally installed, seamlessly integrated into a central app, and now with NRG we can integrate energy management – an important element for homeowners who want to effectively monitor their energy use and associated costs.”

Key insights for homeowners and smart home providers
With growing demands, increasingly disjointed devices and rapidly rising costs, the smart home industry has reached a critical inflection point. Consumers are more excited than ever about developments in technology and are vocal about their preferences. They recognize the value of investing in best-in-class solutions, but only when those options can easily meet and exceed their expectations.
