(WKYT) – Large white blocks visible near a construction site on Interstate 64 in Shelby County are made of geofoam, a construction material made from expanded polystyrene.
For today's good question, Tom asks: What are the large white blocks near the structure on I-64 in Shelby County?

The blocks are made of the same material as Styrofoam, although Styrofoam is the brand name of the product manufactured by Dow. Companies produce large, high-density blocks specifically for construction use.
Common construction applications
Geofoam is most commonly used to fill voids near highways, bridges or embankments.
Despite their high density, the blocks remain relatively light compared to the ground. This means the blocks are less likely to damage existing utility lines and are easier to move. The material also does not settle as would be the case with soil.

Once the geofoam is in place, another barrier, such as concrete, is placed over it.
Geofoam has other uses including insulation, stadium seating and green roof projects.
