Where we live: a little bag rest

Havering Council and Romford Bid have joined the heart of Romford to open a new green area.

The named North Street Garden – the small country in the North Street – was transformed into a permanent green area so that the residents and visitors can enjoy.

This was financed by the British government and the mayor of London as part of the “Greening the Borough” section of the UKFF Financing Schemas (the British joint wealth fund).

As part of the flagship campaign that we live, the Council supports projects that help to make the district cleaner and greener.

The green space was originally installed as a temporary feature in 2022 and was part of an initiative to bring color, liveliness and a quiet area in this part of the city center of Romford.

The work was carried out by Sally Protero Landscape Architecture and Contractors, Blakedown Landscapes.

In the area, a number of benches for people in a new paving rod will sit and relax with increased planters.

These are surrounded by types of trees and plants that were particularly selected to improve pollination and the environment.

A survey was carried out by the Romford offer in which the residents were asked to name the new permanent space, and the majority were to name the North Street Garden.

Council member Barry Mugglestone, Havering's cabinet member for the environment, said:

“Havering has some great parks around the Romford city center, but there were no green areas in the busy high street areas.

“We then had the opportunity to create and improve a green area right next to our local shops and companies together with the Romford bid and the UKFF fund of the GLA.

“We hope that the North Street Garden can enjoy somewhere residents and everyone who works in the area and use our local shops.”

Julie Frost, Romford Bid Director, said:

“We are thrilled that Romford has delivered these permanent green areas for Romford.

“North Street Garden is more than just a name, it is reflected in how this room has become part of our community.

“We are very happy that the public has helped us choose it!”
