WALTHAM, MA (December 7, 2025) – The Tufts University women's fencing team had a strong day on Sunday with four wins in six games at the Carla-Mae Richards Invitational hosted by Brandeis University.
The highlight of the meet for the Jumbos was a 16-11 victory over Penn State University, which placed seventh at the NCAA Championships last year. Tufts also earned a thrilling 14-13 win over Boston College, as well as a 21-6 win over Lawrence University and a 23-4 loss against Drew University. Tufts suffered a narrow 15-12 loss to St. John's University – fifth in the NCAA a year ago – and lost 19-8 to Brown University.
The win over Penn State included Tufts wins with all three weapons. In a 6:3 saber victory Anahat Bawa, Asher Boynton And Emily Xu all of them won twice. When the score was 5:4 in the foil it was 3:0 Sophie Guan and two wins Saanvi Kapoor. Two wins apiece Karen Bei And Mikayla Joseph led the 5-4 Tufts victory in épée.
The hard-fought game against Boston College was headlined by the Saber's 6-3 victory. Boynton won all three games while Bawa claimed two wins. Florett and Degen both fell behind by just 5-4 points Layla Roys two wins in foil and two wins in pacing epee.
Chloe Wang, Jess Charalel And KUoi Liu Liu were all unbeaten in the 9-0 win in foil against Drew (3-0), as was Boynton in saber and Olivia Judicke in the sword. Perfect grades from Xu and Olympe Jean in saber and bei in epee led Tufts to victory over Lawrence.
The 12 points the Jumbos scored against St. John's were led by Guan's two wins in foil, two wins each by Boynton and Xu in saber, and two wins by Emily you for swords. Three Sabers Boynton wins led the Jumbos against Brown, and Bei took two of three wins in epee.
Boyton's record of 13-2 (.867) led the Saber group, which was 36-18 overall (.667) today. Xu also had a winning mark of 10-8 in saber and Jean had a record of 5-0 in her few matches. Bawa finished the race with eight wins.
A 9-3 record (.750) from Guan was Tufts' best record in foil, where the Jumbos were 30-24 (.556) overall. Wang (4:2), Charalel (3:2) and Liu (3:0) were successful in spot play for the Jumbos.
The epee team was 28-26 (.519) on the day, with Bei's 10-5 mark (.667) leading the way. You've won eight times and Olivia Judicke was 4-0 in limited action.
Tufts goes into the semester break with a 12:10 overall win. The team will host its annual Tufts Invitational on Jan. 18 at the Gantcher Center.
