Work has begun on a new park, Mithna Park, between Mqabba and Qrendi, the Environment and European Funds ministries said.
The ministries said the family park will be built on an area larger than a football pitch, adding that the area, which was previously a quarry, will be transformed into a green open space for the community.
They said the project is located in Triq l-Imqabba and is being implemented by Project Green in consultation with Mqabba and Qrendi local councils. The project, according to the ministries, will be carried out with an investment of two million euros and will be supported by the European Regional Development Fund. The implementation takes place on an area of around 7,400 square meters.
Beverley Costa, Project Green's chief operations officer, said the installation of green roof canopies will collect rainwater and reuse it to irrigate the park. The ministries added that the park will also include a reservoir, an amphitheater and a table tennis table, and that 100 trees and around 500 shrubs will be planted.
Minister Miriam Dalli said that residents of the area have known the place where the park will be built as a “quarry area” for many years. She noted that through this project, the government will create a “beautiful open space for the residents of these places.”
Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said this project clearly shows how EU funds are being used efficiently to increase green spaces in communities. He said the government, through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, is investing in various sites around Malta to strengthen the natural environment and improve people's access to quality green spaces.
Project Manager Andrea Saliba said Project Green believes and understands the contribution that the environment makes and also that nature serves as a source of peace for all. He explained that one of the agency's goals is to provide open and safe spaces where the public can spend time in peace or relax.
